Guidelines for purchasing a UPS system for your pharmacy
- It is not recommended to connect the refrigerator(s) to the same UPS device that protects the cash register and IT systems. This is because the inductive load caused by starting the compressor motor of the refrigerators, especially with old batteries, can cause interference with other equipment connected to the same UPS.
- When the compressor motor starts, the refrigerator causes a short (less than 1 second) but high (around 1000-1500W) instantaneous load on the UPS. Due to this high inductive load, not all UPSs are suitable for this task and the UPS system must be carefully selected, monitored and maintained.
- UPS equipment from any manufacturer with a total output power of less than 1500VA is not suitable as a backup power supply for refrigerators, but is well suited for a variety of cash register and IT systems. However, the output power provided by the UPS must be sufficient for the total load connected to it.
- APC Easy UPS units with a minimum total output power of 1500VA can be safely used as a backup power supply for a single refrigerator. Therefore, only one refrigerator can be continuously connected to the UPS. In the event of an acute power failure and under CONTROL, a second refrigerator can be temporarily connected to the UPS, but this may have a significant impact on the back-up time and the UPS equipment should be monitored on site.
- APC Easy UPS units with a total output power of 3000VA or more can be used to back up two refrigerators. This means that two refrigeratorscan be continuously connected to the UPS. In the event of an acute power outage and under CONTROL, more refrigerators can be temporarily connected to the UPS, but this can have a significant impact on back-up time and the UPS should be monitored on-site.
- The average power consumption of the equipment connected behind the UPS system in the event of a power failure will have a significant impact on the standby time of the equipment. Roughly: average computer consumption 30-80W/unit, refrigerator 20-45W/unit, Seemoto WGW base station about 1-2W - Refrigerator consumption depends on the energy efficiency of the cabinets, age, room temperature (summer/winter) and when and how they are filled.
- Backup times vary significantly between different UPS devices and this is due to the batteries used, their size, quantity and age. In particular, the batteries of UPS devices with lead-acid batteries age rapidly and the backup time can drop to almost zero in just a few years. The lithium-ion batteries in APC Easy UPS devices have a much longer lifespan than lead-acid batteries!
- The vast majority of UPS devices on the market are based on lead-acid batteries. Lead-acid batteries age in use and the manufacturer promises a maximum lifetime of around 3-5 years. Starting a compressor in a refrigerator is toxic for a lead-acid battery, and the life expectancy can be significantly shorter. Lead-acid batteries should therefore be replaced when their performance drops to a level where the safety time assumptions are no longer met. Batteries can also sometimes fail unexpectedly, leading to a rapid decline in battery performance.
- Active monitoring and maintenance of the condition of the batteries is particularly important if the UPS is used as a backup power source for refrigerators. A weakened battery will not be able to start the compressor of the refrigerator and therefore the refrigerator may not operate for a minute in the event of a power failure.
- In order for the UPS system to meet the specified standby time requirements in the event of a power failure, the condition of the batteries must be monitored/monitored for this reason as well.
- The batteries in Easy UPS devices are based on Lithium-ion technology and have a much longer life expectancy than lead-acid batteries. The condition of the batteries can be monitored via the UPS unit's LCD display. If the UPS system is purchased by the user, monitoring should be instructed in the pharmacy's operating instructions, so that monitoring is systematic and documented.
- Seemoto's Easy UPS service product integrates UPS equipment monitoring and battery maintenance and replacement into the Seemoto!
Warning on the use of UPS as a back-up power supply for refrigerators
WARNING: Using UPS devices as a backup power supply for refrigerators is not simple! Although the average power consumption of a refrigerator is low, averaging around 20-45W depending on the size and model of the cabinet, it should be noted that the instantaneous power consumption at the moment the compressor of the refrigerator starts up (for less than a second) is high, up to 1000-1500W. UPS backup power supplies are not designed for inductive loads, which the refrigerator also represents when it starts up. If the UPS is not able to meet this instantaneous high power demand, it is possible that the refrigerator compressor will not start at all, the UPS will fail or its internal fuse will blow, the refrigerator will fail and/or other equipment connected to the same output of the UPS,alongside the refrigerator, will fail. In the worst case, the compressor motor of the refrigerator will not start, but will short-circuit and overheat, creating a fire hazard.
Using a UPS backup power supply to power your fridge it is however possible when:
- The number of continuously connected refrigerators under UPS load will be kept moderate, i.e. 1-2 refrigerators depending on the UPS output power ( however, in the event of an acute power outage and under supervision, the number of refrigerators may be increased).
- The UPS chosen is a high quality model with a sufficiently high output power to meet the high power demand caused by the instantaneous start-up of the compressor motor.
- The condition of the UPS batteries is monitored and batteries that deteriorate over time are replaced in a timely manner (outdated, low-performance batteries cannot cope with the power surges caused by the compressor start-up of the refrigerators => the refrigerators do not work at all).
Easy UPS equipment for cashier and IT systems
The SMX750 series is suitable for all types of power backup for cashier and IT systems up to 600W (equivalent to around 10-15 PCs). The SMX750 series is not recommended as a backup power supply for refrigerators due to its limited output power. The SMX1500 and SMX3000 series are suitable for refrigerator backup power supply.
SMX750 series operating time with different configurations
Listed below are the operating times of the SMX750I (and SMX750INC, equipped with remote monitoring capabilities) at different loads, both without (light green) and with (1 - blue, 2 - orange, 3 - turquoise, 4 - dark green, 5 - light brown). The minimum load of 50W corresponds to about two refrigerators, 100W to 3-4 refrigerators, etc...
The table makes it easy to determine the right configuration for you. For example. According to the table, with a 200W load, the SMX750I without additional batteries will provide a standby time of just over 1h and with one additional battery the standby time will increase to just over 4 hours. In this case, both the SMX750I without additional batteries and the SMX48RMBP2U with one additional battery are viable options.

APC SMX750INC (1149€ + VAT, includes delivery to pharmacy)
Like the SMX750I, but with a network card so it can be connected to remote monitoring. You can set up the remote monitoring yourself using the Schneider-Electric EcoStruxureIT system(www.ecostruxureit.com). Seemoto will also offer centralised remote monitoring for all pharmacy customers in the near future. This will be announced at a later stage.

APC SMX1500 series for even the most robust IT system and/or a single refrigerator
The SMX1500 series is suitable for more rugged power protection for cashier and IT systems. Always 1200W of continuous power, equivalent to around 20-30 PCs. Alternatively, the SMX1500 series can be safely used as a backup power supply for a single, continuously connected refrigerator. In the event of an acute power failure, a second refrigerator can be connected to the appliance INSTANTLY and UNCONTROLLED, but in this case it is not recommended that the appliance has any other significant load.
SMX1500 series operating time with different configurations
Listed below are the operating times of the SMX1500RMI2U (and SMX1500RMI2UNC) under different loads, both without additional battery pack (A) and with additional battery packs (B - one additional battery, C - two additional battery packs, D - three additional battery packs, E - four additional battery packs).
The table makes it easy to determine the right configuration for you. For example. In the event of a prolonged power failure, the plan is to go to the pharmacy and connect a second fridge to the emergency power supply and monitor the system on site. The power consumption of the fridges depends on the model and age of the fridges and is expected to be between about 60-80W. According to the table, at this load the SMX1500 series will run without additional batteries for about 2h and with one additional battery the backup time will increase to about 7 hours. A good choice in this case would be the SMX1500 series with one SMX48RMBP2U battery.
